help i need to talk to someone about depression

HELP! I need to talk to someone about depression! If this is the thought that keeps resounding in your head you should know that help is out there and you are by no means alone in the way you feel.

Even when people have the thought that they need to get help, they rarely reach out to anyone to get the help they need. Many people are ashamed to say they are depressed and fail to seek treatment because they are concerned about what other people will think about their illness. Depression carries the social stigma similar to epilepsy, people fear that it is contagious or that it is due to some failing in the person rather than the fact that it is an illness that needs to be treated and sympathized with.

You Need to Get Help
HELP! I need to talk to someone about depression! May be going through your mind but the biggest problem with treating depression is that people are not seeking help. Of those who seek treatment, much of it is not enough to actually cause relief in depressive symptoms. These are the facts :

  • More than 30% of all depression patients are not diagnosed for their depression
  • More than 50% do not seek treatment for their depression and just as many cases are not recognized by medical professionals
  • About 75% never ask for help from loved ones and the same percentages are undertreated because they are not expressive enough about their symptoms.

You may feel that you have no energy, no desire to live, no reason to try to get help, no will to get up and actively seek help, but you need to because no one knows what is going on better than you do. It may start with talking to someone you trust, maybe even someone you do not know, but it has to start with you.

Getting the Help You Need
HELP! I need to talk to someone about depression! You need to know when to seek help. If you think that some minor event, such as a fight with a mate that leaves you upset but you can bring yourself out of it within a day or so, is depression you are severely wrong.

Depression is an extended period of sadness, hopelessness, emptiness and helplessness that does not change with environment or situation. The feelings do not pass and they tend to worsen. If your symptoms do not get any better or worsen over a period of two weeks it is imperative that you seek help.

It is better to be safe than sorry and seek help even if there is only an off chance that you are depressed. The sooner you get help in treating depression, the better it will be for the effectiveness of the treatment you choose. When depression is left untreated it can result in chronic depression and lead to suicide. You can seek help from:

  • Physicians
  • Mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists)
  • Social workers, counselors
  • Your insurance company
  • Mental health centers
  • Hospital psychiatry departments
  • Hospital emergency rooms (in crisis)
  • Family or social service agencies
  • Employee assistance programs
  • The Yellow Pages
  • Local medical/psychiatric societies

All you need to say is “HELP! I need to talk to someone about depression!” and someone will help you.
