For some people depression is a normal part of life that has to be dealt with every day in some way. Dealing with depression is no easy task; it takes regular therapy and sometimes drug or herbal treatments and the strength to get past the challenging days.
As a depressed person, you may have days where you feel like the future is so bleak that there is no point in going on living and you have to be able to recognize these times for what they are, depressed days. People dealing with depression have a lot to handle because depression is no always accepted as a normal illness and can be seen as being some failing in the character of the sufferer.
Depression is no more the fault of the sufferer than the flu or a bacterial infection (though sometimes infections are sort of the fault of the sufferer depending on how the infection came into being).
Symptoms of Depression
Dealing with depression requires that you be aware of the symptoms of depression whether you are the sufferer or someone who is close to a depression sufferer. Symptoms of depression include:
The inability to feel pleasure from activities that used to be enjoyable
Feeling worthless, hopeless or guilty for no reason
Self-isolation from people you care about or interact with normally
Fatigue
Irritability and agitation
Indecisiveness and difficulty thinking
Poor concentration on any task, even simple ones
Change in sleeping habits (insomnia or hypersomnia)
Change in eating habits which results in weight changes (significant gain or loss)
Thoughts of hurting yourself or even suicide
Understanding Depression
There is no known cause for depression and doctors struggle to come up with treatments that work long term, not to even mention trying to find a cure. Dealing with depression means you have to try to find a way to understand that this illness may have no specific cause and may be due to a hormonal or chemical imbalance in the brain.
Somehow that makes it easier to deal with and makes you more likely to get help. No one hesitates to go to the doctor when a chemical imbalance disrupts a normal bodily function; you should not hesitate to seek help in dealing with depression in just the same way.
Ways of Dealing
There are many methods of dealing with depression and you can try different ones on for size to see which one works for you. The important thing to do is take a proactive role in treating depression by getting help and being treated under the supervision of a medical professional.
Find a way to have fun each day. That may seem difficult when you are depressed, but working at having fun requires you to expend energy which increases the energy you have overall and decreases the feeling of low energy that often comes with depression.
Eat balanced meals. Junk food and unhealthy dining items takes away from the health of your body in addition to giving you that nasty sugar crash at the end. Find a healthy diet with foods you like and stick to it. You do not have to diet to lose weight (unless you want to) but a healthy diet is one of the most important aspects to a healthy body and mind.
Experience emotions. Emotions are the basic makeup of every person and denying that allows depression to seep in unnoticed. You should feel free to experience and express the emotions. You can cry, be angry, be happy, be wild and express any emotion because it is a part of you and a way of releasing the tension that builds when you are depressed. In some cases that release comes in the form of writing and a journal or diary can be a great tool for treating depression.
Push out negative thoughts. Many depressed people suffer from an excess of negative thoughts about their life and the troubles they experience. Trouble is sometimes a part of life and has to be accepted. When you internalize those things and blame yourself for them you run the risk of increasing your depression.
Have a support group. Someone who cares about you should be aware of your depression and be there to help you when you hit a stumbling block. Your support group should uplift you when you feel low and encourage you when you feel discouraged.
